By Money Tree team,
Is it safe to connect your bank to a budgeting app?
Short answer: it can be, when the app connects read-only through a secure bank data provider. Read-only means the app can see balances and transactions but cannot move money. Check how the connection works, who handles your bank login, and what the privacy policy says before you link anything.
It's a fair question. Your bank account is sensitive, and "link your bank" is a big ask.
What does read-only mean?
A read-only connection gives an app permission to look at data: balances, transactions, account names. It gives no permission to pay, transfer or change anything. Even if something went wrong in the app, the connection itself couldn't send money.
Who sees your bank password?
In a well-built setup, you sign in on your bank's own page or through a regulated data provider, not by typing your password into the budgeting app. The app receives a limited access token instead of your credentials.
A checklist before you connect
- Read-only access. The app should say so plainly.
- A named data provider. It should say who handles the connection.
- A clear privacy policy. What's stored, for how long, and who sees it.
- A way to disconnect. You should be able to remove a bank later.
- No request for payment permission. A budgeting app shouldn't need it.
A quick comparison
| Read-only link | Full access | |
|---|---|---|
| Can see transactions | Yes | Yes |
| Can move money | No | Yes |
| Needs your bank password in the app | No | Sometimes |
| Right for a budgeting app | Yes | No |
Common mistakes
- Skipping the privacy policy. It's dull, but it's where the answers are.
- Reusing one password everywhere. Use a unique one for your bank.
- Leaving old connections. Remove apps you no longer use.
- Using public Wi-Fi to link accounts. Wait for a trusted network.
How to do it in Money Tree
- Start from the connect screen. The in-app Connect your bank screen explains that access is read-only, that you sign in through your bank, and that syncing starts straight away.
- Let it sync daily. Money Tree connects through secure bank data providers and syncs daily. It cannot move money.
- Review what it sees. Your transactions and categories show what the app can see, so you know exactly what's being read.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to link my bank account to a budgeting app? It depends on the app and how it connects. Look for read-only access through a regulated bank data provider, no storage of your bank password by the app, and a clear privacy policy. Read-only means the app can see data but cannot move money.
Can a budgeting app move my money? Not if it connects read-only. A read-only connection lets an app see balances and transactions but gives it no permission to make payments or transfers.
Can I disconnect a bank from a budgeting app later? Yes. Good apps let you remove a connection, and you can usually also revoke access from your bank's own settings.
